Taiwanese vessel intercepted and escorted to Cape Town Port

On 07 September 2016 the Department of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries through its Vessel Monitoring System spotted a Taiwanese Vessel Chin Jen Wen entering South African Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) sailing from Mossel Bay direction to Cape Town direction. It was established that the vessel did not apply for any permit from the department. Fishery Control Officers (FCOs) who were on board the Fisheries Protection Vessel Victoria Mxenge in Overberg region were alerted and they intercepted the Taiwanese Vessel in the morning of 08 September 2016.

I&J unveils multimillion rand vessel

I&J, an AVI subsidiary and South Africa’s oldest deep-sea Cape Hake fishing company, celebrated the unveiling, naming and ceremonial blessing of its new fishing vessels by Archbishop  Desmond Tutu’s daughter, Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu, at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.

DAFF research and patrol vessel operations under new management

South African shipbuilding and maritime solutions company Nautic South Africa has confirmed it will transfer the operation of the six Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) research and patrol vessels currently under its management to the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA’s) Special Marine Projects Division at the end of October 2014. SAMSA’s current mandate is to ensure safety of life and property at sea, prevent and combat pollution from ships in the marine environment, and to promote the Republic’s maritime interests.

Optimised patrol vessels add punch to the fight against maritime crime

Piracy, drug smuggling and human trafficking have been going on right under our noses for a while, including illegal and unregulated fishing; and oil pollution. But there’s a spark of hope in the form of six Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries’ (DAFF) vessels, which have been restored to their former sea-going glory and are patrolling South African waters.
