FACING a wide square in Paarden Eiland, Cape Town, is the buzzing facility of SCHIPPER STEEL, now in its 60th year of specialising in ‘engineered enclosures’ for a wide range of industries.
Geoff Bowers, Managing Director of SCHIPPER STEEL, and a 27-year veteran with the Company, says, “SCHIPPER STEEL began life as H A Schipper & Co (Pty) Ltd in 1953 as an electrical wholesaler.
Soon, lighting was added to the mix, and it was through its local production of lighting components that SCHIPPER STEEL’s love affair with metal design and fabrication started.”
Although there were forays into other types of metal fabrications such as ducting, the second 30 years SCHIPPER STEEL saw a focus on enclosures and housings. Manufactured from mild steel, stainless steel (including 3CR12) and aluminium, the range of mainly ‘bespoke’ enclosures includes Multi-Purpose and Floor- Standing Enclosures, Modular Floor-Standing Enclosures (like the one pictured above), Computer Cabinets, Consoles and Desks, and Multi-Purpose Boxes.
Bowers says, “Our intense concentration on enclosures has meant the development of tremendous design and fabrication ability.”
It’s not unusual to see one of the SCHIPPER STEEL team whip out a pad and start sketching what the client says they want. Very soon, the finished design spec. reflects what the client really needs.
“That’s why our products have come to known as Engineered Enclosures,” says Bowers.
In an industry where much attention seems to be given to CNC assets, SCHIPPER STEEL has a different ethos and positioning. “We’re old enough to know, small enough to care, and big enough to do the job. For the next 30 years and beyond,” adds Bowers, “we’re committed to Caring for Client and Craft.”
Reinforcing this, SCHIPPER STEEL has modified its long-time corporate signature of a red SCHIPPER within a red lozenge by changing the ‘C’ in its name to blue, calling attention to the ‘Caring for Client and Craft’ philosophy. The ‘caring’ aspect of SCHIPPER STEEL extends to its provision of a Service Centre which can cut, bend, form, weld and powder coat any component you may need for your own production. And, should you have need for someone to take the headache out of fabricating a special piece of equipment, all you have to do is call SCHIPPER STEEL’s General
