Wine and Olive Oil Production Expo heads for Cape Town in 2017

South Africa is the eighth largest producer of wine in the world with export volumes having doubled in the past ten years. According to a study commissioned by the SA Wine Industry Information & Systems (SAWIS), published in January 2015, of the R36.1 billion gross domestic product (GDP) contributed by the wine industry to the regional economy, about R19.3 billion eventually would remain in the Western Cape to the benefit of its residents. Growth in contribution to GDP has been in excess of 10% per annum since 2003. Exports to Europe and the USA remain strong whilst export sales into Africa are also growing.

Continental, tyre manufacturer of the year

Tyre Technology Expo 2017 was staged in Hanover from February 14-16. Continental was honored by trade journal "Tyre Technology International" with its Tyre Manufacturer of the Year award, first presented in 2008. With this award, the high-caliber panel of 27 judges, including experts from Europe, Japan, India and the United States, honored the investments that Continental has initiated over the past twelve months.

Budget 2017: Only growth can balance the books

Lest we forget how far we’ve come

The improvement in the Main Budget primary budget balance (revenue less non-interest spending) over the past four years to an estimated -0.4% of GDP for fiscal year 2016/17, from a deficit of -2.7% of GDP in 2012/13, is a clear statement of intent. It is also a remarkable achievement in a low-growth environment with an excessive unemployment rate and rising demands on state resources.
