Thousands of jobs and the future existence of South African based paint manufacturers are at risk because of a government decision to negotiate the abolition of Chapter 39 import duties, specifically resins, from the East African Community (EAC) and Egypt.


SA leaders announce power partnership to dramatically scale drone industry

The local drone industry has been explosive in the last few years, rapidly climbing in status among the typical technology purchases and seasonal gift lists across South Africa. The challenge is that the industry hasn't yet known how to service and scale this demand in a nascent industry. The connection between sales, training and education, regulatory compliance, repairs and accessory suppliers has been disparate, allowing for droneenthusiasts to fall short of the law, putting themselves and others at risk.


SA road freight industry undergoing ‘tech disruption'

Following the lead of tech innovators in the taxi industry, South Africa’s road freight sector is set for a similar shake-up. According the latest Logistics Barometer (published by Stellenbosch University), transport remains the most significant portion of logistics costs (57% of the total in 2014)* — an opportunity that is being seized upon by Cape Town-based start-up Linebooker.  A spinoff from the innovation arm of CCS Logistics (part of the Oceana Group), the company has launched an online-bidding platform that connects bulk business transport customers and trucking companies to offer transparent pricing, as well as end-to-end delivery facilitation services.


Africa is not a sample size of one, emphasise industry leaders

Generic references to Africa blur the contexts, opportunities, challenges and risks as they relate to individual countries and you cannot have a generic strategy for expansion into Africa, not even for a region, because “Africa is not a country”, said Priya Soobramoney, University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB) alumnus and Old Mutual’s Executive Head: Africa Strategic Change and Information Technology.
