BUMPER FESTIVE SEASON FOR CITY IN SNAP SURVEY

"The 2007/2008 festive season has been a bumper season, as predicted by the industry. A snap accommodation survey conducted by the City’s Tourism Department indicates a positive growth in occupancies," Cllr Simon Grindrod, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Development and Tourism, said today.
According to the survey, occupancy figures for establishments with 10 or more rooms, increased by nearly 12 % on last year. The average stay (number of nights) remained constant in different market segments and is significant in the light of increased oil prices and interest rate hikes.
Cape Town Tourism members (all categories) indicated that the majority had a busier season than last year and the V&A reported record visitor numbers.
A big positive for Cape Town is that NO serious visitor safety incidents were reported at our main tourist attractions. We believe that the collaborative approach between all stakeholders, citizens and visitors contributed significantly to improve visitor safety. Campaigns such as the Festive Season Visitor Welcome and Safety Campaign, the launch of the Cape Town Tjommie Ambassador project and the Safety Awareness Campaign, all contributed to this positive result.
Grindrod said: “We are proud of the achievements of the tourism sector over the festive season. The fact that we had no serious visitor safety incidents is a testament to the hard work and dedication of all roleplayers involved. Cape Town remains a world class destination which prides itself on creating wonderful experiences for overseas and local visitors and we are determined to grow this sector in order to create jobs and business opportunities for all our people, especially the informal sector.”
