The Cape Philharmonic and Youth Orchestra Come to Parklands

After months of negotiating with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra we are extremely excited to inform you that we have formed an association with them and become a ‘Donor’, bringing a new level of culture to our College and in particular the cultural department. Those of you who have been fortunate enough to attend a concert by the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, will know what an exciting and uplifting experience it can be. This nationally acclaimed orchestra will be visiting Parklands College on Tuesday 2 September and Friday 5 September to perform for our learners, who will be exposed to the instruments of the Symphony Orchestra by means of an interactive educational programme. This will be delivered by members of the Cape Philharmonic and Youth Orchestra and Conductor, Alexander Fokkens. Our association with the Symphony Orchestra will provide a platform for performances, positions in the orchestra and tuition on orchestral instruments for our young musicians. The opportunities that will become available for our learners in the future will be phenomenal and hopefully as the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra brings music to the people, it is the hope that the people will flock to their performances. Parklands College and the PCOS have made a pledge to support this valuable programme, not only for Parklands College but for a much wider community.
In addition to the performances for the learners on 2 and 5 September, the CPO Spring Showcase will be held at Parklands College Hall on Friday 26 September 2008 at 19h30 and will feature the Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and Cape Philharmonic Youth Ensemble. This will be a wonderful opportunity for you and your families to support this active group of young musicians who are very proudly growing culture in Cape Town. Tickets are priced at R30 each and are available through Parklands College Administration. The proceeds of their performance on 26 September will be donated to the Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra in order to support their outreach programme.Parklands College is extremely proud and excited about this new venture and would like this event to touch as many lives as possible. Kindly assist us, by being the voice of the Parklands Family, and spread the news throughout the community. A short summary of the work that the CPYO do: The core business of the Cape Philharmonic is performing as a symphony orchestra of international standard. However, the nurturing of future musicians and the development of youth music in Cape Town, plus developing new audiences in this country, are of equal importance.
The Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (CPYO) was formed in 2003 as part of the CPO’s development and transformation plan. Since 2004 the CPO has also been training young musicians in the Cape Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble (CPYWE). Many of the members of these youth orchestras come from previously disadvantaged communities. The members of the professional orchestra are committed to a programme of teaching and training through regular workshops, master classes and one-on-one tuition.
The CPYO performs on a regular basis and has appeared several times as a curtain raiser at symphony concerts of the professional orchestra, and on special occasions performs with the CPO. Apart from this mentoring programme, young conductors from local communities are also being trained.
We would also like to wish the following learners well for their auditions at the Cape Town Youth Orchestra (Wind Ensemble) on Saturday 30 August: Emma Baines, Jazmin Edmondson, Emily Mitchell, Anastasia Rouchos, Chambrez Zauchenberger and on Saturday 6 September, Jared Paisley.
We look forward to a long and happy association with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and the Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Welcome to Parklands
