Volunteers for 2010

The search for 2010 volunteers has begun, with the Confederations Cup voluunteer program being said to be one of the successes of that tournament. The Local Organising Committee (LOC) expects more than a hundred thousand applicants, as the Confed Cup saw about thirty thousand people applying.
The World Cup will have international applicants which will count to about 10% while South Africa will make the other 90%. The LOC is calling all those who believe they have the required skills to fulfill the many tasks FIFA has set out for the event to run smoothly.
In the article below Sally Evans gives more detail on what the volunteers will be expected to do and what the LOC and FIFA have listed as requirement for the different sectors. THE Fifa World Cup’s local organising committee yesterday launched its worldwide search for 15,000 volunteers for the 2010 soccer tournament.
The local organising committee will recruit 12,000 South Africans, 1500 volunteers from the rest of Africa and 1500 foreigners for the event.
More than 100,000 applications are expected.
The 16 areas of work volunteers will undertake in June next year include:
# Welcoming services at airports, Fifa-accredited hotels and stadiums;
# Language support;
# Spectator services; and
# Administration (filing, faxing, photocopying), environmental services (such as waste management) and information technology, including unpacking equipment.
Danny Jordaan, the local organising committee’s chief executive, told a media briefing yesterday that volunteers were the life blood of Fifa 2010.
“From ushering people to their seats, to assisting the media and foreign-language speakers, welcoming people at the airport and driving guests around, it is the volunteers that actually make the tournament happen,” he said.
“We are expecting a huge flood of applications from across the world,” he said.
Onke Mjo, the committee’s volunteer-programme manager, said volunteers must be at least 18 years old and have a good command of English.
“Foreign volunteers will add value through their language support, but they will be twinned with South African volunteers.”
Mjo appealed to applicants to be patient during the selection.
“We are expecting at least 100,000 applications so there will be a three-month wait before applicants are told if they have been selected for interviews, which will take place in January and February,” she said.
