Absa Bank is to sponsor the inaugural national women’s championship in Tshwane next month and preparations for the week long event are already underway. The tournament will feature nine provincial teams, selected from the second-tier Absa regional leagues that comprises some 650 teams, and will run from August 10 to August 15. Eersterust Stadium, which adjoins Mamelodi township, will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the Absa Women’s league National Championship, with other matches scheduled for Muckleneuck Sports Grounds. Safa is pressing ahead with its objective to take the beautiful game to the people, and Safa Tshwane, as a host region, is working tirelessly to get supporters around Mamelodi and surrounding areas to attend “football festival of women”. Safa’s Director of Competitions Balebetse Monnakgotla says the tournament will be a combination of football and life skills programs. On the football side of things, experienced referees, administrators and coaches will conduct workshops with tournament referees; team managers and coaches respectively. Players will also benefit from life skills workshops that include financial planning, self management and social skills. Speaking at a media briefing in Johannesburg yesterday, Safa CEO Raymond Hack expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the Absa League since inception. “It is pleasing to see a development league that was launched in February 2009 culminating into a National Championship. We thank our regions for making the Absa Women’s League the success it is today, and we are grateful to our partners Absa for supporting Safa’s cause to develop women football in the country. “We are hosting the African Women’s Championships in October 2010, and we are confident that tournaments of this nature will generate more interest in women football, and will also create a bigger pool of players for our national coaches;” he added. Desiree Pooe, sponsorship manager for Absa, said: “The Absa Women’s League has been filled with great excitement over the past six months, resulting in a number of rising talent being unearthed during the course of the season. “Playing in a structured league has presented the opportunity for development and experience for co-ordinators and players alike and we are confident that this experience will serve them well as they progress in their careers.”
