Welcome to March 2009.
As the year hastily rolls towards 2010, Cape Town makes vast improvements all round.
The City of Cape Town is currently investing great time and budget in meeting its citizen’s general needs. Significant improvements have been implemented in road and bridge upgrades, Hospital Bend being one of the inner city’s most pertinent upgrades; the building of new dams like the Berg River Dam; the improvement of water work systems and general city cleansing with companies like IWEX Waste Management.
New developments are also rife amongst the communities, with special attention being paid to improving both the safety and beauty of public parks in Cape Town and to addressing security and community building needs.
Friends of De Waal Park and the Oranjezicht Higgovale Neighbourhood Watch are two organisations formed by the people for the people and have brought a great deal of upliftment to the area.
The retail and hospitality industries are also raising the bar in implementing world class standards, contributing to Cape Town’s reputation which is synonymous with the travel and tourism industry.
As always the OK and GP CID’s continue to fulfill their “crime and grime” mandate, working closely with the Green Point and Oranje-kloof communities to keep our areas safe, beautiful and socially uplifted.
We shall keep you up to date with new developments as they take place and if you’d like to send us information on developments that you’ve noticed and any questions please email us on info@gpcid.co.za.
Best wishes,
Marc Truss

CHINARMUSE – FINDING BEAUTIFUL INSPIRATION IN KLOOF STREET
Situated in Kloof Street, Chinarmuse is a boutique store that imports works of art in the form of furniture, jewellery and clothing from the Far East.

CLEANSING THE CAPE WITH IWEX WASTE MANAGEMENT
WHAT IS IWEX?
IWEX (Integrated Waste Exchange) is a free online system that enables waste generators and users to exchange waste materials. Operating on the principle that ‘one person’s garbage is another person’s gold,' IWEX facilitates the re-use of waste, thereby conserving energy, minimising resource use and reducing the pressure on Cape Town's landfill space. The service is freely available to anyone who generates or uses waste, including companies, individuals, institutions, schools, NGOs and community groups.
WHY USE IWEX?
- IWEX can turn fixed costs for waste storage, transport and disposal into savings
- IWEX can give your company a competitive edge in the sustainable usage of resources
- IWEX can unlock a market for your company's unwanted materials
- IWEX can help you locate alternative material suppliers that offer the perfect input material for your business, at a competitive price, thereby lowering your raw material or input costs
- IWEX can improve your company’s environmental and social responsibility image
HOW IT WORKS
1. Register - new users
Register on the IWEX system to list any waste materials you'd like to exchange, contact others whose waste you'd like to obtain and receive an automatic notification when someone wants your waste material.
2. Logon - existing users
To 'advertise' your unwanted waste, you need to logon to the IWEX system. You can then create a list of the waste materials you'd like to offer and/or specify the materials you're looking for. This information is then posted onto the IWEX

COMMUNITIES VERSUS CRIME AND GRIME
Two community based projects that we wish to acknowledge for their great work against crime and grime are:

With their collaborative philosophy top of mind, OH Watch modeled their strategy on the very successful Tamboerskloof and Hout Bay Neighbourhood Watch initiatives and consulted the CIDS, SAPS and Community Policing Forum (CPF). ...(read more) FRIENDS OF DE WAAL PARK

The R1.5 billion Berg River Dam, opened by President Kgalema Motlantheon 5 March 2009 is a significant triumph for all concerned because it was completed on time, within budget and it will augment Cape Town’s water supply by almost 20%.
The project, implemented by the Trans-Caledon Tunnel Authority (TCTA), will increase Cape Town’s total water supply from 668 to 898 million cubic metres per year. Central to the success of the project, was the partnership between the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF), the City of Cape Town and TCTA.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH
“One should guard against preaching to young people success in the customary form as the main aim in life. The most important motive for work in school and in life is pleasure in work, pleasure in its result and the knowledge of the value of the result to the community.”
