Welcome to October 2009.
I would like to commend the entire CID team for their relentless hard work this month, maintaining their routine patrols and security checks, and also gearing up for the festive season with a number of new proactive initiatives.
We have also put together an article about the benefits of proactive security as well as some useful safety tips to keep in mind when you're going on holiday.
We have included some interesting feature articles this month which are definitely worth a read. The first is all about the Collect-a-can recycling initiative, and the second one explains how you can do your bit to improve customer service in South Africa.
As always, we have also hand-picked a bunch of upcoming events for you to choose from, and hope that you find some if not all of them appealing! We are particularly excited about the launch of the Cape Quarter which is taking place in early November and hope to see you all there.
Have a great month and remember to email any questions or information through to info@gpcid.co.za and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
Best wishes,
Marc Truss

CRIME AND GRIME
PROACTIVE VS. REACTIVE SECURITY
In order to make the GP and OK CIDs safer places to live, work and play, the CID team is constantly coming up with innovative ways to improve their crime fighting and security techniques. They are placing a particular emphasis on proactive rather than reactive security.
In a nutshell, this approach focuses on ways to prevent crime and increase security before an incidence happens, rather than waiting for something to happen and then reacting to it.

Do your bit to improve customer service in SA
With 2010 just around the corner, and summer on our doorsteps, customer service needs to be top-of-mind for all business owners and consumers. We all need to do our bit to raise the standard of customer service in South Africa to ensure that both visitors and residents have a positive service experience when they visit Cape Town.
One of the most effective ways to do this is to provide feedback to businesses and restaurants - whether it is a compliment or constructive criticism, they need to hear it! We have put together some useful tips on how to complain effectively and have also listed some of the benefits of complaining online, via an independent complaints portal such as www.getclosure.co.za.

Green Point Visitors Centre
The Green Point Stadium Visitor Centre was officially closed on 30 September 2009. Over the past seven months 80 000 local and international visitors have witnessed the various stages of development from the viewing platform at the Visitor Centre.
The CID team were amongst these lucky visitors and we thoroughly enjoyed ‘The Greensman’ theatre performance about the history of the Green Point common and the virtual stadium tour video as well as visiting the viewing platform.
Tribute to Osman Jacobs
We would like to extend sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Osman Jacobs, who passed away on the evening of Thursday 24 September 2009. Osman, affectionately known as OJ, was an integral part of the CID team for over six years, where he progressed from an entry level position to being part of the parking management team due to his dedication, hard work and trustworthiness. He was an incredibly caring and thoughtful member of our team and will be sorely missed by all of us, especially his season’s greeting cards which were all personally hand drawn and carried very special messages of goodwill.

SAFETY TIPS
Is your home secure while you’re on holiday?
If you’re planning a business trip, family holiday, or even just a weekend up the coast, remember to take proactive steps to ensure that your home is protected while you’re away:
• Let the CID team know when you’re going to be away so that they can check up on your property during their routine patrols.
• If you have an alarm system, let the security company know that you are going away and check that your alarm system is working properly.
• Try to make the fact that you are away less obvious. Read more to find out how to do this.
