Welcome to December 2009.
There is no doubt that 2009 was a challenging year that not only forced the world to sit up and take note of our actions (financially, environmentally, socially and politically), it also laid the foundation for what promises to be a prosperous 2010.
As we reflect on our local successes in the year gone by, highlights such as the successful Final Draw, the improved infrastructure throughout the city, the magnificent stadium, the new developments in our areas (see New Developments), the increased security thanks to the SAPS Equestrian Unit and many more stand out. But what 2009 taught us most of all is that when everything else feels like it’s tumbling down, family matters most.
As we enter what has already proved to be a bumper festive season, leading into a vibrant and promising 2010, remember to acknowledge those around you, those in need and yourself.
Happy holidays and stay safe.
Best wishes,
Marc Truss

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN YOUR CID?
CRIME AND GRIME
Interview with Sergeant Lawson and Superintendent Steyn
On behalf of the CID team I would like to commend the SAPS Mounted Unit for all their hard work patrolling through our CIDs to ensure that crime is kept to a minimum. We interviewed Sergeant Lawson and Superintendent Steyn to find out more about the work they do:
What are the SAPS horses used for?
They are used for daily patrols as a crime prevention measure. The SAPS officers on the horses are in radio contact with the CID vehicles and SAPS headquarters so that they can request back up and vehicles to transport suspects and criminals when necessary.
How many horses are there and where are they stabled?
We have 27 horses and stable them in Tamboerskloof. Each officer is responsible for his own horse and feeds and grooms it every day.

INTERESTING NEWS
Cape Town Military Tattoo
From 19 – 21 November 2009 South Africans congregated at the Castle of Good Hope to witness the fifth annual Military Tattoo. The programme was designed to both entertain and educate the spectators about South Africa’s diverse military and social history and culture through a number of military demonstrations, army and navy bands, a performance on horse back by the SAPS Mounted Unit and a battle re-enactment.
The feedback about the event has been incredibly positive, with mentions of how well organised, family orientated and accessible the event was. The fact that it was sold out for all three performances is a testament to this. Highlights included the Cape Town Highlanders performance, which was only one of the four pipe bands that performed at the event, the precision of the guns going off in time with the light and smoke special effects, and the SAPS Mounted Unit performance which demonstrated their ability to work both as individuals and as a team.

USEFUL TIPS
Travel Safety Tips
To make sure that you can relax and really enjoy all the glamorous work functions, festive family gathering and parties with friends this December, we’ve put together some suggestions on how to travel safely.
First and foremost, don’t drink and drive. Remember that your driving skills are impaired after just one unit of alcohol. According to the South Africans Against Drunk Driving website, approximately 18,000 South Africans die in motor vehicle crashes every year and another 150,000 people are injured. This costs the South African economy R43 billion a year. Alcohol is involved in about 50% of the cases.
