Another month has flown by, and everyone seems to be back in to the swing of things and set to make the most of 2010. The CID team has had a successful month in terms of visible policing, assisting SAPS with a number of arrests and with the issuing of parking fines. Read more about this initiative in the Crime and Grime section below.
We are launching a new interactive section in the newsletter this month, which gives you the opportunity to ask questions and learn some useful tips on who to call or where to go when you have a problem. Click here to go to the Q & A section now. And following on from our water sustainability tips last month, we have put together a list of simple ways for you to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
We would like to welcome Alla Posta Restaurant and Deli to the Oranje-Kloof CID and look forward to enjoying more of their delectable Italian treats in the future. We’ve also included a write up on Shelley’s Gourmet Café this month, which will be a familiar favourite for many of you, and is a must try if you haven’t been there yet. If you’re looking for a fun day out a little further a field then scroll down to the events section and find out what’s hot and happening in Cape Town over the next few weeks.
Best wishes,

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN YOUR CID?
CRIME AND GRIME
Road Accidents on the Increase
GP and OK CID security manager Marius Swanepoel says “we are concerned by the increase in the number of accidents and parking tickets being issued in the GP and OK CIDs over the past couple of months; in January 2010 alone 470 tickets were issued in the GP CID district, and 416 in the OK CID district”. With this in mind, we have put together a couple of safety tips for you.

CLEANSING
Waste Update
In January 2010, 'supplementary cleansing' has resulted in the collection and removal of an estimated 11 200kgs (1 600bags*) of waste from the Green Point CID area and 4 550kgs (650bags*) from the Oranje-Kloof CID area.
* These statistics are lower than usual as some of the bags allocated for January 2010 were distributed in December 2009.
LIFESTYLE
Shelley’s Gourmet Café
Whether you’re in the mood for a scrumptious breakfast, a healthy lunch or a decadent slice of cake, you need to pay Shelley’s Gourmet Café on Kloof Street a visit this month.
There are three separate seating areas to cater for your mood: if you feel like catching a few rays of sunshine and watching the world go by, then grab one of the tables in the front garden; if you want to enjoy the ambience of the café amidst the beautiful décor then choose a spot inside the old Victorian house; and if you just feel like a bit of quiet time then make your way through to the secluded little courtyard at the back with a good book or today’s newspaper.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS
Alla Posta Restaurant and Deli
As you step through the doors of Alla Posta you literally feel as if you’ve stepped into one of the local favourites in a little Italian town. The staff are warm and inviting, and the shelves are filled with delectable treats including home-baked biscuits, olives and real Italian olive oil. You can also peep over the wide wooden counter in to the kitchen and watch pastry chef Brendon Jacobs and pizza chef Matthew Thuthu creating their specialities.
Owner Matteo Amatruda has limited the menu to simple, authentic Italian dishes, ranging from Colazione (breakfast) to an assortment of Pizzas, Piadine (flatbread), Insalate (salads), house specialities such as home-made pasta and decadent deserts. When asked what her favourite thing on the menu was, Manager Consuelo Cantisani said with a smile “definitely the tiramisu”.

Q & A
This new, interactive section of the GP and OK CID newsletter gives you the opportunity to learn some useful tips on who to call or where to go when you have a problem. Please email your questions through to us (info@gpcid.co.za or info@okcid.co.za) and we will publish them along with the answers in our next newsletter.
What should I do with my garden refuse?
OK CID Manager, Mike Reeler’s advice is for you to use any spare capacity in your ‘wheelie bins’ for garden waste, and if you have larger volumes, you can make a special collection arrangement with the City via the Help-line 086 010-3089. You can also call this number to report illegal dumping.
Alternatively, household or garden waste can be dropped off in-between waste collection days at of the City’s drop-off facility, located in Beach Road, Woodstock (see map). The depot is open every day from 07:30 to 16:00 and will accept up to 1,300kg (1, 3 tons) of non-hazardous waste, at no cost. Green garden waste is then chipped and composted, while builder’s rubble is crushed for re-use.

USEFUL TIPS
Practical steps to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
- Buy only what you need and avoid buying excessively packaged products.
- Try to avoid disposable products, such as disposable razors, cameras and paper plates.
- Choose glass over plastic wherever possible as it can be recycled. (Many plastic packaging items are still not recyclable in South Africa.)
- Repair items rather than throwing them away.
- Choose packaging and products that have recycled contents and are recyclable – look for the recycled symbol.
