Welcome to March 2010
We have had an exciting few weeks with the launch of OUR 2010 on 02 March and the Green Point and Oranje-Kloof CID AGMs on 09 March at the Victoria Junction Hotel in Green Point.
Both AGMs were a great success. I would like to thank all our board members for the time and energy which they invest on an ongoing basis to ensure that the GP and OK CIDs are able to fulfil their mandates and continue to expand and develop our areas.
I’d also like to thank George Dearnaley for sharing his thoughts about the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and for reminding us of what an incredible opportunity we have to be ambassadors for our country over the World Cup period.
Don’t forget to read through our list of upcoming events to find out what’s on in and around Cape Town over the next few weeks.
Best wishes,
Marc Truss

CRIME AND GRIME
Road Accidents on the Increase
GP and OK CID security manager Marius Swanepoel says “we are concerned by the increase in the number of accidents and parking tickets being issued in the GP and OK CIDs over the past couple of months; in January 2010 alone 470 tickets were issued in the GP CID district, and 416 in the OK CID district”. With this in mind, we have put together a couple of safety tips for you.

CLEANSING
Waste Update
In February 2010, 'supplementary cleansing' has resulted in the collection and removal of an estimated 8 400kgs (1 200bags) of waste from the Green Point CID area and 9 100kgs (1 300bags) from the Oranje-Kloof CID area.
NEW DEVELOPMENTS
OUR 2010
On 2 March 2010 the GP and OK CIDs launched the OUR 2010 Campaign to raise R100 000 from 100 businesses in the 100 days leading up to the FIFA World Cup.
This money will be used to pay for membership fees for underprivileged children from our CID districts to attend the African Brothers Football Academy on an ongoing basis. Membership will enable these children to play football in a safe environment, develop their skills under the guidance of experienced coaches, play in matches and tournaments, and interact with children from different cultures and backgrounds.
The GP and OK CIDs are working in collaboration with Craig Hepburn, founder of African Brothers Football Academy and former Bafana Bafana striker George Dearnaley to make the OUR 2010 Campaign a reality.
To kick off the campaign, the GP CID and OK CID have each donated R3 000. If your business would like to make a contribution to the campaign, please click here to fill in the donation form on the OUR 2010 Campaign website.

Green Point CID AGM Overview

“The Green Point City Improvement District (GPCID) was incorporated as a Section 21 Company on 15 July 2001. As we approach the start of our 9th year, we need to take time to reflect on the past year and look at our successes and failings and see where we have come from…” Read more

Feedback Session
The feedback session comprised of two parts and was open to all residents and business owners in the GP and OK CID districts.
The first section was an overview by GP and OK CID CEO Marc Truss, who explained how the CIDs were formed and then demonstrated how they are making a tangible difference in terms of waste management, crime reduction, area upgrades, social intervention and community participation. He also introduced OUR 2010 which you can read more about in the new developments section of this newsletter.
The second half was a talk about the 2010 FIFA World Cup by Soccer Business Manager for the Media24 Group, and former Bafana Bafana player, George Dearnaley.
Dearnaley set the tone by stating “The World Cup represents the single biggest marketing opportunity for this country, ever.” To put this in perspective, he went on to ask the audience, “How much would you pay to market to an engaged audience of 40 billion people for a month?”
His discussion focused around the fact that South Africans have an amazing opportunity to be brand ambassadors for our country. He also emphasised the fact that businesses still have time to implement ideas and initiatives for the World Cup, they just need to start now!

OK CID AGM Overview
The OK CID AGM also ran smoothly, and you can read Chairman Chris Fick’s full report on our website:
“The past year has been one of change - not only to our environment, but also in terms of our service providers and the profile of the Oranje-Kloof area as a whole. This shift in direction has been brought about by the CID’s continuous efforts to improve service delivery, the growth of new retail outlets and commercial entities throughout Oranje-Kloof and of course a sizeable influx of property development.” Read more
