I hope you have all enjoyed the last few weeks, especially with the lovely long weekends to look forward to and enjoy.
With just over 50 days to go until the FIFA World Cup the GP and OK CID teams have been busy with preparations, assisting SAPS and other involved parties. If you are planning to market your company during the tournament, be sure to read the Q&A section of the newsletter for some useful guidelines and a list of restrictions. We are also almost half way through the OUR 2010 Campaign, which you can read more about in the interesting news section.
We also bring you an update on the White Line Section, some great energy saving tips and the inside scoop on the Chef’s Warehouse and Cookery School which opened in Oranje-Kloof last Friday. In terms of upcoming events, we have a whole host of exhibitions and festivals for you to choose from.
Best wishes,
Marc Truss

NEW DEVELOPMENTS
Chef’s Warehouse and Cookery School
We’d like to extend a warm welcome to Liam Tomlin and his team from the Chefs Warehouse and Cookery School on New Church Street in Oranje-Kloof, which opened last week.
Liam Tomlin and his wife Jan have spent the last six months creating this stylish culinary hub, which includes a cooking school and a retail section filled with glossy cook books, an impressive range of quality kitchen equipment, over 50 different spices and an array of other delectable treats. Everything in the Chefs Warehouse is handpicked to ensure that it is of the highest quality, and absolutely everything is for sale, as Tomlin says, “If it moves, it goes!” The books for cooks section is filled with recipe books from all over the World and they plan to extend it until it has the largest selection in South Africa.
The cookery school will host renowned local and international chefs, who will run a series of cooking classes, open to anyone who is passionate about food and wine and wants to learn. Courses range from a series of 20 sessions to a once off 3 hour class... read more

White Line Section
Over the past seven years, the collaboration between the Green Point City Improvement District (GP CID) and the Cape Town City has enabled the White Line Section team to continue to improve and repaint road markings between Van Guard Drive and Llandudno.
Says GP CID CEO Marc Truss, “The work completed by the White Line Section often goes unnoticed; however it makes a considerable difference to our safety on the roads and ensures that traffic flow is as organised and effective as possible.” read more
OUR 2010: one step closer to raising R100 000 in 100 days
As we mentioned in our last newsletter, the GP and OK CIDs launched the OUR 2010 Campaign to motivate businesses to invest in the sustainable development of our communities through football in the 100 days leading up to the FIFA World Cup.
A big thanks must go to Harley-Davidson Cape Town for their generous donation of R10 000. This will go towards membership fees for underprivileged children to attend African Brothers Football Academy (ABFA) and new soccer balls for the Academy.
All businesses are welcome to make a donation, big or small, to help us to transform the lives of children living in and around our CID districts. Visit www.cid2010.com to find out more or click here to donate now.
Tribute to Victor Adonis
Victor Adonis sadly passed away on the 20 March 2010. He was an integral part of our CID team and had an incredible ability to overcome the hardships he faced, with a smile on his face and walking proudly. His presence will be greatly missed by everyone that knew him.
CLEANSING
Waste Update
In March 2010, 'supplementary cleansing' has resulted in the collection and removal of an estimated 8 400kgs (1 200bags) of waste from the Green Point CID area and 10 500kgs (1 500bags) from the Oranje-Kloof CID area.
Q & A
This new, interactive section of the GP and OK CID newsletter gives you the opportunity to learn some useful tips on who to call or where to go when you have a problem. Please email your questions through to us (info@gpcid.co.za or info@okcid.co.za) and we will publish them along with the answers in our next newsletter. What specific advertising restrictions are being enforced during the FIFA World Cup?
FIFA has put together a document with some general principals and a list of “Do’s and Don’ts” regarding advertising during the World Cup tournament, for example the use of the official logos, branding and phrases.
This document covers topics such as general advertisement, ticket promotions, contests, editorial and advertorial use, the commercial and non-commercial use of the match schedule, business names and merchandise etc. Read more on the FIFA public guidelines page. ENERGY SAVING TIPS
With winter just around the corner we need to ‘train our brains’ on how to make the best energy choices to make our homes safer and ensure that we are environmentally friendly as possible. Here are a couple of tips: - Look out for the standardized energy-efficient label when purchasing new appliances. The ‘A’ rating is most energy efficient and ‘G’ is least efficient.
- Buy the smallest sized appliance that you can for your cooking needs to save fuel.
- Soak beans, samp and lentils overnight as this saves time, money and several hours of cooking.
- When a pot of food has reached boiling point then you can reduce the heat as the food will continue cooking as effectively. It does not have to boil vigorously all the time.
- Buy energy-efficient fridges and deep freezers. Ask for refrigerators that have a highly efficient compressor and BLDC fan motor to help save energy.
- Always keep a space at the back of the fridge for air to circulate around the condenser coils.
- A full fridge uses less energy than an empty one. Keep bottles of water in your fridge as they will retain the cold.
