Welcome to the May 2010 edition of the Green Point and Oranje-Kloof CID newsletter.
With construction almost complete, and just 24 days to go, the lure and excitement of the World Cup is becoming more and more tangible. To ensure that you’re completely in the loop in terms of what is happening, we’ve included a complete schedule of matches information on road closures, the Grand Parade and the information on Fan Walk.
Having completed the Cape Town Tourism Service Excellence Program, the OK and GP CID teams are equipped with all the knowledge and skills they need during the tournament and are rearing to go.
We’re also entering the final leg of the OUR 2010 Campaign, and encourage you all to get involved if you haven’t done so already. You will also stand a chance to win tickets to On Broadway if you make a donation before 15 June 2010. Read more in the interesting news section.
Stay warm, stay dry and enjoy the World Cup festivities,
Best wishes,
Marc Truss
OK/GP CID CEO
WHAT'S HAPPENING IN YOUR CID?
CRIME AND GRIME
Additional security during the World Cup
The OK and GP CIDs will support all World Cup activities organised by the City and FIFA, and assist the relevant organisations where necessary. However their primary focus will be to stick to the ongoing CID mandate to ensure that there is constant and visible policing in Oranje-Kloof and Green Point to reduce criminal activity.
To make this possible the CIDs are planning to employ additional staff, and introduce digital radios at the end of May 2010. These radios will allow for more effective communication and improve response rates.
Having a law enforcement officer in the CID patrol vehicles over the past few months has also made a significant difference to combating crime in our areas, and this will continue for the duration of the tournament. NEW DEVELOPMENTS
The Grand Parade
The Grand Parade, with a capacity of 28 000, will be the official FIFA fan festival for the duration of the World Cup. Entry will be free of charge and all 64 matches will be broadcasted live. Food and drinks will be available and additional entertainment will be provided between matches.
What to expect along the Fan Walk
The fan walk route is 2,2km long and runs from the Cape Town Station on Adderley Street, to the FIFA Fan Fest on the Grand Parade, along Waterkant Street, across the new pedestrian bridge at Buitengracht, along Somerset Road ending up right outside the Stadium.
There will be a strong security presence all along the Fan Walk on match days to keep crime to a minimum and ensure that residents and tourists feel safe on their way to the Stadium. In terms of facilities, there will be a number of portable toilets along the way, and an array of food and beverage stands, as well as all the restaurants located on route.
With 950 parking bays, and situated right in the centre of the fan walk, the Cape Quarter is the ideal place to enjoy the World Cup festivities. The Piazza and the Square will be transformed into festive party zones with an array of live entertainment and plasma screens to watch the games. All the restaurants and coffee shops will offer value for money packages to cater for fans who want quality, quick and simple meals on their way or way back from the Cape Town Stadium. Service Excellence Program (SEP) to benefit GP and OK CIDs
GP and OK CID Security Manager Marius Swanepoel, 2010 Coordinator Gary Vince and Vetus Scholar Manager Dolph Venter recently attended a Service Excellence Program (SEP) in preparation for the FIFA World Cup next month.
Cape Town Tourism is running this comprehensive course to equip relevant organisations with tourism awareness and 2010 FIFA World Cup information. The course covers general information about Cape Town, tourist attractions, transport, safety and security.
Commenting on the programme, Marius said “I really enjoyed the course and think that it will be a tremendous help as we train the GP and OK CID teams for the World Cup. If a resident or tourist approaches one of our staff members we will be able to assist them with general queries and explain how to get to some of the top tourist spots, as well as being able to assist them in an emergency.” ... read more
OUR 2010 Update
Amidst all the World Cup excitement, the Green Point (GP) and Oranje-Kloof (OK) City Improvement Districts (CIDs) have been hard at work to ensure that underprivileged children in Cape Town have an opportunity to be part of this experience through the OUR 2010 Campaign.
The 30 children supported by the campaign are playing soccer on a regular basis at African Brothers Football Academy. Several of these children took part in the Under 14 Kit Bag Tournament at AFBA on 25 April. Says ABFA founder Benedict Thorburn, “The joy and enthusiasm expressed by the children supported by the OUR 2010 Campaign was incredible, and the event as a whole demonstrated how football can play a key role in bringing youngsters together, giving them a sense of belonging, purpose and hope for the future.”
Another highlight was the Under 13 Workshop, which took place last Saturday, kindly sponsored by City Build It. The workshop gave the younger players a chance to practice their ball skills under the expert guidance of former Bafana Bafana player George Dearnaley.
On behalf of the GP and OK CIDs I would like to say a big thank you to the businesses that have supported us so far, including Harley-Davidson Cape Town, DHK Architects, City Build It, On Broadway, BrandsRock and City Build It.

CLEANSING
Waste Update
In April 2010, 'supplementary cleansing' has resulted in the collection and removal of an estimated 8 400kgs (1 200bags) of waste from the Green Point CID area and 14 000kgs (2 000bags) from the Oranje-Kloof CID area. * These statistics are lower than usual as some of the bags allocated for January 2010 were distributed in December 2009.
Q & A
This new, interactive section of the GP and OK CID newsletter gives you the opportunity to learn some useful tips on who to call or where to go when you have a problem. Please email your questions through to us (info@gpcid.co.za or info@okcid.co.za) and we will publish them along with the answers in our next newsletter. How do I find out what public transport is available during the World Cup?
FIFA has put together a document with some general principals and a list of “Do’s and Don’ts” regarding advertising during the World Cup tournament, for example the use of the official logos, branding and phrases. You can email transport.info@capetown.gov.za or call the Transport Information Centre’s toll-free number, 0800 65 64 63, at any time of the day or night.
What should I advise a tourist to do if they lose their passport?
All lost or stolen passports must be reported to SAPS immediately. They will give them a docket (case number) which the tourist can then take to the relevant consulate. The consulate will arrange a new or temporary passport.
