Dear Readers This month we take a stroll back in time to reflect on how and why the CIDs were formed. After six years in operation we remain unwavering in our goal to provide an improved product to the ratepayer in our respective areas of jurisdiction. The Green Point and Oranje-Kloof CIDs were established not to replace or take-away any form of responsibility from the City but, with its holistic approach, provide supplementary services while taking “crime and grime” into consideration. This enables us as a non-profit body to forge public/private partnerships that will in the long-term provide added value to our service provider portfolio. Therefore I refer you to the Green Point Chairman’s report [see AGM report below] that will give you an overall understanding of what we as CIDs are about and how much we’re able to achieve over the course of a year. As the chairman aptly says: “One of the most important aspects of policing is relationship building and the CID continues to bridge the gap between the private and public sectors.” This aspect of our role is key to our success and we hope you will endeavour to support us in this goal. Best wishes, Marc Truss Profile of Marius Swanepoel Marius Swanepoel has been with the Green Point and Oranje-Kloof CID for four years. His great connections with SAPS probably stem from 11 years in service as a police officer and his resultant ability to collaborate with the SAPS is only one of many advantages he brings to his position as CID Security Manager. read more back to top SNIPPETS 1. Green Point AGM It was tough going when the CIDs started operations in July 2001. Today, the CIDs boast a remarkable 50% reduction in reported crimes since its initial deployment to the safety and security portfolio and have embarked on many more improvements in the areas of traffic, parking, roads, planning, cleansing and social programmes. From the little-known entities they once were, the Green Point and Oranje-Kloof CIDs have entered the big league. Click here to read the full Thursday 30 August , 2007 AGM report. read more 2. A spate of recent incidents where hikers were robbed on Table Mountain has spawned fresh debate on how safety and security on this National landmark can be improved. While responsibility lies with officials to make funding available for this purpose, hikers are challenged with the ultimate safety responsibility of being on the look-out. Prevention is better than cure, they say. So the next time you take a hike, heed the following safety tips. - Do not walk alone, always walk with a friend or in a group. By walking alone you are an easy victim for criminals.
- Always let somebody know where you are going and how long you expect to be.
- Do not trust strangers: do not follow people you don’t know into deserted areas.
- Do not carry unnecessary valuables.
- If confronted: do not resist, give the person your bag/ camera/ watch.
- Remote areas: Avoid remote areas with few people, stick to well populated paths.
- Guides: If you choose to use a guide make sure your guide is from a reputable company.
- Baboons and animals: Please don’t feed any animals you meet as they could become aggressive.
- Be Aware: All cities have their good and bad elements, take note of where you are in terms of safety.
- Please ensure that you allow enough time to complete your walk before sunset.

Table Mountain National Park is primarily an open access Park; from time to time there is criminal activity in some of the urban edge areas of the Park. In answer to both these challenges the TMNP recruited and deployed Visitor Safety Officers (VSOs) to patrol popularly used zones in the Park. The VSOs give advice to hikers as well as act as a deterrent to criminals. http://www.sanparks.co.za/parks/table_mountain/tourism back to top | Dates to diarise SEPTEMBER ABSA Currie Cup Rugby: Western Province vs Boland Date: 1 September 2007 Venue: Newlands Rugby Stadium Tel: 021 659 6720 sarfu@mweb.co.za www.sarugby.net Dirtopia Spring Walk Date: 1 September 2007 Venue: Dirtopia Trail Centre, Delvera Farm, Stellenbosch Tel: 021 884 4752 theteam@dirtopia.co.za www.dirtopia.co.za Cape Homemakers Expo Date: 1- 2 September 2007 Venue: Cape Town International Convention Centre Tel: 021 465 2200 expo@homemakersfaircape.co.za www.homemakersfaircape.co.za Darling Voorkamerfest Date: 1-2 September 2007 Venue: Darling, Cape West Coast Tel: 072 862 7101 fishbush@eject.co.za www.voorkamerfest.co.za Cape Town International Fair: Indian Shopping Festival Date: 1 -
