EDITOR’S LETTER

Dear Readers

With the new year already in its third month, the Green Point and Oranje-Kloof CID teams are hard at work to ensure that we make an even bigger difference and add even more value to your area this year.

Over the festive season, there was a considerable decrease in reported incidents of crime, due to effective cooperation between our partners (i.e. SAPS, Metro Police, Law Enforcement, various private security companies) as well as the members of the public. We extend a sincere thank you to all our sponsors and the individuals who assisted us during this time. Together we are making a real difference.

In fact, since their introduction in 2001 and 2002 respectively, the Green Point and Oranje-Kloof CIDs have helped to achieve a 60% decrease in crime. To continue this service we have applied to extend our tenure for another three years – stretching to 30 June 2011. Click here to view the respective business plans.

We also want to warmly welcome new residents to the Green Point and Oranje-Kloof areas. Click here to learn more about what exactly a CID is and why we exist. We also strongly encourage you to familiarise yourself with the people and places in your surrounding area as this is the key to increase your personal safety.

Look out for the new branding on all Green Point and Oranje-Kloof CID vehicles, as well as new and improved uniforms and equipment to be launched in the coming week. Also refer to our website for the relevant emergency numbers and be sure to have these on hand at all times. Remember that the CIDs’ effectiveness is closely linked to YOUR commitment to report incidents, so take safety precautions during your everyday life, and be alert to your surroundings. In closing, we are looking forward to working together with you in 2008 to build a stronger community, yield better results and consequently establish a safer and cleaner environment within which we can work, play and live.

Know your neighbour

Join the fight against crime in your neighbourhood by being alert

By being more aware of your neighbours' habits and the surroundings of your neighbourhood, it will be easier to spot an unusual or suspicious situation, particularly in the wake of the recent power cuts. Together, you can be each other's eyes and ears.

There are a several small precautionary steps you can take to help connect with your neighbours and to make your community even safer:

Make sure you and your neighbours know the contact numbers for the local SAPS and the CID patrol vehicles in case an instance needs to be reported. If you live in an apartment building, ask your landlord to post the information in a common area, accessible to all residents.
