With the GP CID celebrating its seventh birthday in the month of July we look back with a sense of achievement and a motivation for the road ahead.
Previously untested in South Africa, the City Improvement District model as a supplementary safety and cleansing service, has achieved significant results within communities throughout the Cape Town metropole and has increased from only one to a current total of 14. Often described as a 'purpose-built' model, CIDs are able to adapt and change to best suit the needs of the community in which they are operational. This also rings true for the GP and OK CIDs.
Starting as something very small and facing many initial challenges as few people were familiar with the model, we have managed to win the trust and approval of the community and have developed into a substantial organisation offering supplementary services to the Green Point and Oranje-Kloof community members collectively.
THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIP
TEAMING UP FOR SUCCESS
Looking back, it's evident that the CIDs' accomplishments and impact within the community are the result of many role-players, partnering with the CID teams to fulfill their mandate.
This month we recognise and thank these individuals for the role they have, and continue to play within the CIDs by looking at the in-depth interviews published in past newsletters.
DOING BUSINESS IN CIDS MAKES SENSE
As our areas have improved in terms of safety, security and cleansing over the past few years, there has been an increase in commercial activity within our CIDs.
OK CID:75% commercial: 25% residential
80% commercial: 20% residential
We asked a few of the businesses within our CID boundaries what they feel the benefits are of operating within a CID
IMPORTANT SAFETY TIPS
Support crime prevention - implement these security tips!
Based on the annual crime statistics released by SAPS, the main areas of concerns are the following:
- Robbery at non-residential (mainly business) premises.
- Robbery at residential premises increased.
We are serious about combating the increase of these crime trends in our area! We urge you to partner with us by implementing the relating security tips:
Keep your business safe
STOP WHINGING AND WIN
Growing up, most people are taught: "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all." This isn't necessarily correct though, as it is up to us as consumers to speak our minds when things go wrong and we experience bad service. Of course, responsible companies should welcome and encourage these complaints in order to correct the situation, retain the customer and restore their reputation from word of mouth damage.
What about the flip side? What about saying something nice for a change and recognising good customer service?

ANNUAL SAPS CRIME STATISTICS RELEASED Commenting on the annual 2007/2008 crime statistics released by SAPS earlier this month, Marc Truss, Chief Executive of the Oranje-Kloof and Green Point City Improvement Districts shares the following:
"It is encouraging to see that there is an overall decrease of -6.4% in the incidence of contact crime achieved during 2007/2008. We acknowledge SAPS for their hard work and continued efforts in the fight against crime. Unfortunately personal encounters with crime such as house or businesses robbery drastically affects a person's perception of security,
