Common Identity and Common Vision: a Series of Social Dialogues

One of the key challenges to our desire to drive high, inclusive economic growth in the Cape is the lack of social cohesion in the region. If the politicians won’t work together, let’s at least ensure that the citizens of Cape Town and its surrounding region join hands to define what we have in common and what we want to achieve together in the future.Accelerate Cape Town, in association with the SA Ubuntu Foundation, will be hosting four dialogue sessions at two-month intervals during 2008. The first session, “Who are we?” is planned for March 2008 and will explore the notion of what it means to be a Capetonian. In session two we will focus on “What we have in common”. Participants will be guided to talk about their understandings of race, class, gender, community, and so on, with a focus on the things that we share. The third session will aim to establish “A common vision for Cape Town”. The discussions will explore a future vision for the region, as well as identifying those things that must happen to enable progress towards such a vision. The fourth and final session will aim to deliver “Ideas for Cape Town”, producing inspiring and audacious suggestions that we can implement to make Cape Town a more creative, sustainable and inclusive city. People of all languages, cultures, religions, social groups and races will be encouraged to participate. The process will be supported by a co-ordinated media campaign and a kit that will enable companies, organisations, schools and others to replicate the process in their own environments.Accelerate Cape Town looks forward to developing social cohesion in this region that is more commonly known for its divisions.
