Accelerating the Cape Region onto the 2010 World stage

Many South Africans including those of us down here in the Cape Region held our breaths as the 2010 Soccer World Cup Preliminary Draw was held in Durban over the weekend of the 24-25 November 2007. As the Fifa powers that be and the world’s media descended on Durban many pessimists were already casting their first doubts about our ability to host this first phase of what will be a rollercoaster ride over the next 3 years. It certainly has turned out to be a truly African spectacle which led Sep Blatter to pronounce that it was one of the best Fifa evens he had ever attended. Off course the world’s media also lauded South Africa and Durban in particular for having hosted a successful event. This success should also reverberate down here in the Cape Region, and finally silence those doomsday profits who continue to belief that we do not have capacity to pull off major events. What is more impressive though has been the co-operation between all major stakeholders involved in Durban’s 2010 readiness; their Local 2010 Committee, national, provincial and local government stakeholders, safety and security institutions, businesses and local communities all worked together as one unity to showcase that we are in deed ready. This co-operation should accelerate the resolve in the Local 2010 Stakeholders in the Cape Region to put aside their differences, and start working as a collective ready and able to put on a uniquely Cape extravaganza. On the 29 November 2007, Mayor Helen Zille in association with Accelerate Cape Town is hosting an “Engagement with Business” session to discuss the concept of fan parks for the Fifa 2010 World Cup, sponsorship and partnership opportunities.
