There is a sports club in the the Eastern Cape city, East London, where one day 34 years ago a group of surfers issued a challenge to a group of runners. The challenge was issued in reaction to a heated debate that had developed over which group of athletes were the fitter, and the challenge was to be a race between the two groups of athletes from different codes. The surfers lost in a road running relay, but self-confident as surfers are, they believed they could win on their own turf, the beach. They didn't.
In spite of that, the self-confidence of the surfers has remained strong over the last three and a half decades, and now a race that began as a friendly challenge between a small group of friends has escalated into a race that has around 2500 entrants, some coming from as far as Canada. What is most noteworthy though is that there is still one man, Douglas Kunhardt, who was present to hear the bet being made in Buffalo Sports Club and has run in every single instalment since 1974! Discovery Health recently began sponsoring this gruelling event which has contributed to its visibility in a sigificant way.
