Jack Carlisle started training in November 2008 at Cybersmart. In May 2009,
he swam his first club gala. To move into league galas, you need to swim two qualifying times at club level which he did in his first gala and from then on he started swimming in the WP league galas.
For the rest of 2009 he had to swim to get qualifying times to be able to compete at one of the two major galas in the Western Province. These qualifying times are national times and approved by SA swimming. If you are a beginner swimmer like Jack was, the expected route to follow is to qualify for Jack Currie and then the following year for the WP Champs. However, Jack qualified for the WP Champs straight away where he won two gold, one silver and a bronze in his age group.
Despite all the galas throughout the year, the main event is always the national championships. There are three levels with different qualifying times for each. Of these, level 3 is the top level. Jack had four qualifying times for Level 3 and competed in seven events in East London from 12th – 16th March 2010. He turned 12 just before nationals and was one of the youngest to compete.
He improved five of his times and was placed 9th in 50m Fly and 200m IM. This is a phenomenal achievement in such a short space of time. It is not the norm for a child to accomplish what he did in less than a year as it generally takes 2 – 3 years. Congratulations, Jack. We are very proud of you!
Luca Powell did very well at the Western Province tennis trials and scored the maximum he possibly could. On Saturday 20th March, Central played against South, North, Helderberg and Tygerberg. Luca won all four of his matches (6-3; 6-1; 6-1; 6-2). He was asked to play again on Sunday 21st March. He played two matches vs the number 1 and number 2 of Helderberg where he beat the number 1 (6-1) and lost in a tiebreak to the number 2 (5-6). Final results of the WP tennis trials: Luca Powell U11A; Calvin Jordaan U13B and Sean Hegarty U13A.
Niki Tavares competed in a three day soccer tournament on 20 – 23 March in Kensington. Santos, Ajax, Vasco, Old Mutual were amongst the top clubs involved. Niki captained the U11A side and 40 teams in his age group and they won the tournament with no goals conceded.

Kenny Solomon, SA Chess Champion, was at school to interact and share his expertise with our chess players. It was an exciting time for the children as they actually got to play against Kenny.
