KwaZulu-Natal’s landmark R8 billion King Shaka International Airport and Dube TradePort at La Mercy is scheduled to open on 1 May 2010. That’s the word from Terence Delomoney, the local boss of the Airports Company of South Africa (Acsa) and general manager of Durban International and National airports.
Airports countrywide present an exceptional outdoor branding opportunity. Firstly for construction companies . . . airports are always under construction and construction companies have carte blanche in the positioning of branded temporary construction fencing and branded fencing using printed shadenet or printed shadecloth. The business traveller is the decisionmaker for construction projects is so airport construction site branding is the perfect way to reach the target market. It hasn't started in South Africa yet, but in the international market, Printed Shadenet Solutions has seen how construction companies are far more image conscious when it comes to the neatness of their sites and how it is easily and affordably achieved with well positioned and neatly erected temporary fencing covered with printed shadenet.
Printed Shadenet Solutions manufactures and supplies fence height shadenet in 50m rolls in the corporate colour of the construction company and can brand it with the construction company logo every few metres. Rolls can be distributed countrywide as has been done by Gordon Verhoef and Krause (GVK), Grinaker-LTA, Haw and Inglis and NMC. These construction companies have been clever to take advantage of the free construction site advertising space and opportunity affordably and economically.
Next year's 2010 Indaba will be the first major global event catering for 13 000 international and regional business tourists who will go through the new airport at La Mercy according to Colin Naidoo, communications manager at Durban International Airport. “It will also be an opportunity for ACSA, the province and city to showcase our new airport, the new stadium and our readiness for the Fifa soccer World Cup."
The second big airport marketing opportunity is the hundreds of shadeports which can be viewed by travellers when parking or collecting their cars or from the air. Shadeports can be branded with the company logo and call to action and can be combined with other media such as cellphones for rapid high end adoption and penetration. Printed Shadenet Solutions is in close contact with the airports with an arrangement for brands to capitalise on this branding opportunity.
The Ilembe Consortium including Group Five and Wilson Bayly Holmes-Ovcon have done an exceptional job of meeting tight deadlines according to ACSA and shown their commitment to deliver on time. In tight economic times, WBHO and Group Five have an excellent opportunity to exhibit their brands and simultaneously convey an excellent image on site with outdoor branding and printed shadenet fencing.
KSIA is going to be ready for the FIFA 2010 World Cup which presents a further excellent branding opportunity for international sponsors. Munich-based LGM consultants who are involved with the airport construction have successfully completed similar programmes at about 10 airports around the world, including Munich.
