SMC Enterprise, a leading Microsoft Gold Partner, through its SharePointKonsult division has completed an implementation of a SharePoint-based Intranet Portal for Laboratory Corporation of America. LabCorp operates a sophisticated laboratory network and provides leading-edge medical laboratory and services to an international client base.
According to Bobby Croy, Labcorp Vice President; “We required a solution for our employees to seamlessly communicate and collaborate across various offices located in the region. Our requirements included among others a revamp of their existing Enterprise Intranet Portal, notifications, document management and tracking, workflow and enterprise content management. “
Solution
Microsoft’s Office SharePoint Portal Server 2007 was identified as the most suitable platform to fit in their heterogeneous IT environment. SharePointKonsult designed the solution to meet the client’s Intranet Portal, Web Content Management and collaboration needs using the SharePoint platform. Further components implemented on the SharePoint platform included an extensive knowledge database tool and an innovative CEO Blog.
According to Werner Janse van Rensburg, SharePointKonsult Lead UI Designer, “We used an approach that incorporated strong User Interface and User Experience elements to bring out the best of the features available in SharePoint. This coupled with our change management approach, gave the project significant momentum in the organisation that led to faster user adoption.”
Due to the size of the organisation the rollout was planned in phases, with the IT division users deployed to first. The reason behind this strategy was to develop SharePoint capacity in the IT division to evangelise the platform to the rest of the organisation of 28 000 employees. SMC delivered a turnkey project; from the initial user requirements, planning, deployment and change management deliverables.
Says Bramley Maetsa, Lead SharePoint consultant; “Working with our onsite team in the USA proved to be the most efficient. Our capable team has a deep understanding of .Net Development and SharePoint, which made the project delivery very straightforward. “
Maetse adds that major challenges on the project included content migration and technology integration. The Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal and Office 2007 play a vital role in consolidating and managing the lifecycle of information assets of this vast and complex organization.
Croy concluded that the SharePointKonsult team delivered on LabCorp’s requirements, and has done so very satisfactorily.
