Vitality pharmacy screenings

To make sure you’re healthy and to prevent or detect illnesses early, you can do the Vitality Check at one of Vitality’s participating pharmacies in the Vitality Wellness Network.

Not only will you have peace of mind, but you’ll also earn thousands of Vitality points. So, take a little time out and put prevention into practice.

Certain Vitality Wellness Network pharmacies also do HIV tests. To find out if the pharmacy you would like to go to does HIV tests, please call them to find out before you go.

Earn up to 3 000 Vitality points for a blood glucose test

It tests the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood, primarily to establish if you have diabetes

(Type 1 or 2), or are in the early stages of the disease.

What you get
In the long-term, unchecked diabetes can lead to health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, kidney damage, neuropathy (a disease causing weakness and numbness) and poor circulation. When discovered early, diabetes can be treated and managed through healthy eating, lifestyle changes and/or prescribed medicine.

Earn Vitality points
All adults on Vitality earn 1 500 Vitality points by doing the test at a Vitality Wellness Network pharmacy and 1 500 booster points if you're in the acceptable range. A glucose reading of 6.5 mmol/l or below is within the acceptable range.

Where to start
You do the test at a pharmacy in the Vitality Wellness Network.

Keep in mind
The test measures the amount of glucose in your blood, so ideally avoid eating for six hours before, but drinking water is fine.

Earn up to 3 000 Vitality points for having a blood pressure test

This test is recommended for men and women over the age of 18.

A blood pressure test is a quick, painless test using a medical instrument known as a sphygmomanometer. A rubber cuff is wrapped around your upper arm and inflated, momentarily stopping the blood flow. The test measures the force of the blood on the artery walls as the heart pumps blood through the body.

What you get
It's the best way to assess your risk of high blood pressure, which can put your heart and arteries at risk. You can keep your blood pressure down by maintaining a healthy body weight, following a healthy diet, exercising regularly and managing your stress.

Earn Vitality points
All adults on Vitality earn 1 500 Vitality points by doing the test at a Vitality Wellness Network pharmacy and 1 500 booster points if you're in the acceptable range. Your blood pressure is within the acceptable range if it's lower than 140/90 mmHg.

Where to start
You do the test at a pharmacy in the Vitality Wellness Network.

Keep in mind

Try to avoid caffeine, tobacco, or alcohol for at least 30 minutes before the test.

Earn up to 3 000 Vitality points for having a cholesterol test

This test is recommended for men and women over the age of 18. A cholesterol test is a simple blood test that measures the amount of cholesterol (a fat-like material) in your blood.

What you get

Because it's an indicator of your risk of heart disease, having the test could save your life. If your cholesterol levels are higher than normal, dietary and lifestyle changes can help to bring them down. If your levels are very high, you may need to start taking cholesterol-lowering medicines.

Earn Vitality points

All adults on Vitality will earn 1 500 Vitality points by doing the test at a Vitality Wellness Network pharmacy and 1 500 booster points if you're in the acceptable range. An acceptable score is less than 5 mmol/l.

Where to start
You do the test at a pharmacy in the Vitality Wellness Network.

Keep in mind

The test measures the fat content of your blood, so avoid fatty foods and alcohol the night before. Try not to eat anything six hours before the test.

Cover for pharmacy screening tests

The Screening Benefit covers tests for blood glucose, blood pressure, cholesterol levels and a goal weight assessment (including body mass index and waist circumference).

The total cost for all these tests, which is covered by the Screening Benefit, is R95. These tests will be paid for from the Screening Benefit once per year. You need to have all these tests done at the same time at a healthcare professional, who is part of the Vitality Wellness Network
