Stay Fit During the Winter

It's beginning to get to that time of year again. The leaves are changing colors and the air seems a bit crisper than usual. Sooner or later, those multi-colored leaves will be wrinkled and cracking in our driveways and those fall jackets will turn into winter jackets before you know it. When it comes to the winter most people hibernate in their warm homes and turn their noses up at the idea of exercises, specifically outdoors.

The weather should not be an excuse for exercise. Exercise is vital, especially during the colder times of the year. Illnesses such as the common cold and the flu are usually rampant; however, proper exercise has been known to boost the immune system. Keeping fit may keep you away from winter illnesses.

One important tip is to always stay warm when in the winter. Colder temperatures always make your muscles tighter and we all know that working out with tight muscles can create unwanted injuries. Also when exercising outdoors, always dress in layers. The hotter you get the easier it is to cool yourself down by peeling off a layer of clothing or two. The top layer of clothing should always be wind resistant and resistant to water as well.

Sweating should not be a big deal when exercising. The last layer of clothing that you have should not get wet. Getting wet in cold weather could increase your chances of becoming ill. It is a lot easier to use a heart rate monitor. Also even if you aren't as thirsty as you usually are compared to the summer months, it is always best to stay hydrated. Keep plenty of fluids in your system.

If you are too bent on staying indoors during the cold months, you still have plenty of options. You could always make a small home gym. All you need is a nice set of dumbbells and a jump rope if you want to go the cheaper route. More than likely, you will end up with the same results or you could join a gym or health club. These give you more options as far as exercising is concerned.

A couple other great ideas are to take the stairs or walk around in a large indoor area, like the mall. If you have a decent set of stairs or you are close to an area that has a set, you can spend about half an hour climbing the stairs to give you a decent work out. The same can almost be said about the mall. The mall is a huge open area to walk around. You can easily window shop to enhance the experience.

By staying in shape during the winter months, you won't have to worry about starting all over again once spring comes around. You will be right on course and when summer comes along; you'll have an excellent body to prove it.
