What is Polymer Concrete?

In the age of technology, the use of cast iron manhole covers and frames is becoming obsolete. The phrase that pays dividence is “Polymer Concrete”. Polymer Concrete is a finely tweaked and carefully perfected special mixture of silica sand, chopped fibres and organic polymer resins, used to cast manhole covers that is stronger, more durable and more impact resistant than their iron counterparts.

Apart from the resiliant nature of Polymer Concrete, the product also has no scrap value. Thousands of cast iron manhole covers are stolen and sold every year, resulting in several serious economic and/or public safety issues. While an open manhole can pose a dangerous threat to pedestrians and vehicles, infrastructure like trains and electricity supply can be severely disrupted when cable thieves has access to underground cabling. The fact that Polymer Concrete manhole covers are lockable, further contributes to the product’s long list of advantages.

Products/Features

The manhole cover and frame industry are still been dominated by “cast iron” manufacturers. This has been beneficial to the consumers as cast iron can last a lifetime. However, there has always been the problem of theft as cast iron has recycle value.

The cost of replacing stolen covers claims from the general public caused by personal injury or property damage resulting from open manholes And injury to workers caused by the weight of cast iron covers and frames.

A solution to the theft problem is Polymer, which is a mixture of Resin, Sand and Fibres. This material it light weight and has no recyclable value and minimizes theft. The dimensions of our products are as specified by the SABS. Covers can be colour coded to suite the customers needs.

Replacement covers for cast iron frames can be manufactured; the suitability is dependent on manufacturing the replacement cover to the correct size. Due to the nature of cast iron, not all frames are exactly the same size.
