Manufacturing in South Africa is increasingly facing headwinds from high energy and labour costs and sluggish GDP growth rates. However, as a consequence of generations of autarky, complexity in manufacturing has introduced a cost burden which can only be improved through better management practices and increased efficiencies.
CEO of Nampak, André de Ruyter, discusses how to curb costs in manufacturing through managerial and practical efficiencies. Since joining Nampak in April 2014, De Ruyter has implemented various initiatives and programmes to drive the theme of returning back to the basics of manufacturing. He also introduced the philosophy of “buy better, make better, sell better.” Previously, De Ruyter worked at Sasol where he held various senior positions in sales, project management, business development and strategy. Before joining Nampak, he was senior group executive: Global Chemicals and North American Operations at Sasol.
