Make this Christmas a season of ‘really’ giving by getting involved with a non-profit or by helping someone in need.
From simply swiping a card to buying a ‘Haven Passport’, here are five ways to ‘pay It forward’ this holiday season.
IT’S THE SEASON OF GIVING
SWIPE YOUR MYSCHOOL MYVILLAGE MYPLANET NOW
One of the ways in which you can pay it forward is by swiping your MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet card. It is said that MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet is South Africa’s leading community loyalty programme that enables supporters to raise funds for over 8 000 causes. The programme has already given R72 million for various causes in 2020. Read more over here.
HELP THE AFRICAN PENGUIN
The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (Sanccob) is selling a variety of silver pendant and chain sets on their online shop. These proceeds will go towards their African penguin and seabird rehabilitation programme in order to ultimately conserve seabird species in Southern Africa.
HELP A HOMELESS PERSON
To be a Haven Night Shelter Volunteer is a great opportunity to give back to the community. Here, the organisation works non-stop to help homeless people back to a home. You can either donate money, donate 19 items (non-perishable food, toiletries, sanitisers, masks, cleaning material) or even buy a homeless person a bed.
“With the “Buy a bed” campaign we encourage the community to cover their shelter fees for the first 5 nights and help us to be a sustainable organisation. The campaign is especially for a homeless person with no income. We have more than 2500 new clients per year. So your help is highly appreciated.”
Another campaign running at the moment, also includes what they call ‘The Haven Passport‘. This entitles a homeless person to a meal, a shower, clothing, a bed (if available), social work services and assistance in finding a way back to a home, family and community. Each Passport will buy five nights of shelter at R60 a booklet.
BE AGENTS OF SOCIAL CHANGE
You can buy and wear Relate bracelets which are handmade and sold to make a difference and change lives. As a 100% not-for-profit social enterprise, the majority of our revenue is donated to credible causes and invested in social upliftment initiatives, with a focus on creating opportunities for all involved, at every stage of a project. They’ve already raised R62 530 306 for social upliftment – which includes money raised for the Reach For A dream Foundation and The Endangered Wildlife Trust.
“Relate is all about impact. From raising awareness about charities to creating jobs that in turn raise funds for these NPOs. Over 60% of our income is donated to credible charities and invested in social upliftment initiatives.”
HELP ANIMALS IN NEED
The National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) urges the public to help animals in need by personally joining the NSPCA in taking action against animal cruelty and by using animal-friendly products and services. You can also do an act of kindness for them by adopting specific NSPCA Projects, which are focused on addressing the issues affecting particular animals or by simply making a donation.
