Our Journey, Because of You | Sasol 70th Anniversary | Message from our President and CEO

On 26 September 2020, Sasol celebrates 70 years.

Born of a bold vision to commercialise the production of oil from coal, our enduring tenacity and grit inspired decades of expansion, as we transformed from a single petrochemical site in Sasolburg, South Africa, to become a global player in energy and chemicals.

While our platinum anniversary is a momentous occasion, this milestone occurs at a time of unprecedented disruption and upheaval, as the world grapples with a global pandemic.

Sasol itself is undergoing a process of renewal, as we boldly redefine a sustainable future under a revised strategy and operating model.

Against this backdrop, it is a less than ideal context for celebration. Nevertheless, our birthday offers a timely opportunity to reflect on our history and heritage, and, as important, our future.

The story of Sasol’s journey is continuously unfolding, being shaped and filled in by the myriad stakeholders, both internal and external, who collectively delivered many successes, navigated many lows and ultimately shaped our identity.

This is “Our journey. Because of you”. You being: our employees; our customers; our suppliers and business partners; our investors; our communities; and the many governments, trade unions and NGOs in the countries where we have a presence.

Our heritage has strong roots in South Africa, our country of origin, but the branches of our tree traverse Africa, Europe, Asia, North America and the Middle East.

All these regions, and our many stakeholders, leave an indelible mark in our journey to date and will guide and inspire us through many more exciting decades to come.

As we look back on our rich history, and confront our present challenges, we can take comfort in knowing that collectively we have what it takes to transition to a brighter future. Future Sasol is the next chapter of our unfolding story and will continue to exemplify our “Our Journey. Because of you.”
