Arrests of alleged rogue Transnet big shots welcomed

The state capture dragnet is pulling in some big fish.

Following their arrests by the Hawks, it is time for former Transnet Chief Executive Officer Brain Molefe and Chief Financial Officer Anoj Singh to face the proverbial music after being repeatedly accused of corruption, which they deny, for more than five years.

Their arrests are important for a number of reasons, not least so that justice is seen to be done, without fear or favour, but also to stop the growing trend of those serially accused of malfeasance claiming they are only targeted due to political factionalism.

Damning evidence of Molefe and Singh’s alleged corruption was presented to the Zondo Commission. The pair not only led Transnet but were transferred to head Eskom at the very height of the State Capture period.

The Hawks having now taken the plunge to arrest Molefe and Singh in respect of the acquisition of trains from Spain that were too tall to run on South African tracks, the NPA must move with haste to bring the matter to trial.

Ultimately, the courts must have the last word on the guilt or innocence of those implicated in state capture.

When people, even the powerful, are held to account for serious allegations leveled against them, South Africa can begin to escape the quicksand of lawlessness and impunity in which it is trapped.
