Exporter of the Year to be announced at Gala Dinner

Thirteen Western Cape companies which together export more than R1,7bn worth of products a year have been named as finalists in this year’s Exporter of the Year Competition.

The competition, now in its 26th year, is organised by the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry and sponsored by the Export Credit Insurance Corporation (ECIC). The prizes include R50,000 for the overall winner, a second prize of a website and corporate branding makeover to the value of R40,000 by Fable Design and a year’s complimentary membership of the Chamber as a third prize.

Ms Janine Myburgh, President of the Chamber, said most of this year’s record number of entrants were relatively small businesses but together all the entrants exported more than R3bn worth of goods.

“This is an outstanding performance and we look forward to honouring them at a gala dinner at the Cape Sun on Thursday, October 13.”

Companies in line for the main prizes range from small home industries started in Muizenberg to factories like Falke Eurosocks which export 4,5 million pairs of running socks to United States.

The finalist are, in alphabetical order are: Abagold which rears and exports abalone, Afrinatural which exports herb products,  All Women Recycling, Bassalicious which exports sauces, Chimpel which makes handbags, Falke Eurosocks, GEO Data Design which analyses information obtained from satellites, J F Hillerbrand a logistics company, Mervyn Gers Ceramics, Oh Voila which makes affordable jewellery, Peninsula Drums which makes and exports storage drums, Klein Karoo International (ostrich products) and Technical Systems, makers of automatic feeding systems for intensive poultry and pig farms.

The big award, sponsored by the Export Credit Insurance Corporation, is for overall excellence in exporting and that could go to a small or large company.

In addition there are the following awards:

  • The Credit Guarantee Small Exporter trophy
  • The Cape Chamber Trophy for a non-manufacturing company
  • The Transnet Port Terminals Trophy for the best Engineering/manufacturing company
  • The Cape Chamber Trophy for excellence in innovation
  • The SAGITA trophy for excellence in design
  • The Gerald Wolman trophy for excellence in doing business in Africa
  • The Nedbank trophy for transformation
