Low Cost Carrier FlySafair was honoured with the Feather Award for Best Low Cost Carrier by the Port Elizabeth Airport today. The Feather Awards are an annual excellence award ceremony, hosted by Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) to recognise the best performing service providers at each airport in the country.

FlySafair scooped their first Feather Award from OR Tambo for Best Low Cost Carrier in the ceremony last year, so today’s win is the second time that ACSA has recognised the airline for outstanding performance.

“Our aim from the start has been very simple. We want to provide South Africans with an affordable, hassle-free and on-time way to travel” says Kirby Gordon, Head of Sales & Distribution at FlySafair.

Since launch in 2014 the airline has grown from a two-aircraft operation flying between Cape Town and Johannesburg to a nine aircraft fleet that presently serves more destinations than any other low cost carrier in the country.

While FlySafair only appeared on the South African aprons in 2014, the airline is actually the product of a long-standing legend in African aviation: Safair. “Few people realise that we are born from a company with a 51-year track record in passenger, cargo and specialised aviation services” adds Gordon, who says that “If you’ve been a semi-regular flyer in South Africa in any time since the 80’s, there’s a very good chance that you’ve been on a Safair aircraft, simply with the tail painted in another colour”. This is due to the airline’s history of operating leases for other airlines.

One of the major criteria for these awards when it comes to the airline categories is the airline’s on-time performance track record. This record is something that ACSA measures for each carrier, and a flight is determined to be on time if it departs within a 15 minute window of the scheduled departure time. All delays are taken into consideration, including delays beyond the airline’s direct control, like poor weather conditions for example. This is one area where FlySafair excels across the board, with the airline boasting top marks across all airlines in South Africa, something that Gordon attributes to the companies experience.

Feather Awards ceremonies for the remaining ACSA Airports will be hosted across the country in the coming weeks.
