Three Western Cape small business owners were awarded with Introduction to Export Training certificates for completing the second-phase of a three-stage programme towards becoming export-ready businesses, at an Export Awareness Seminar that was hosted by the Department of Trade and Industry (the DTI) in Cape Town.

The main aim of the seminar was to broaden the country’s exporter base by developing new exporters and to ensure that Small, Micro and Medium Enterprises (SMMEs) were made aware of what the export process entails. It was also aimed at informing the enterprises about the developmental funding mechanisms and financial incentives available from the DTI for emerging exporters.

Sarita Adonisi of Adonisi Catering, a small enterprise based in Gugulethu, said the programme has developed her from an export industry novice and empowered her to a point where she is able to apply her knowledge into strengthening her company with little or no aid.

“I ensured that I applied all the knowledge that was transferred to me into the day-to-day running of my business. As a result, I can report that to date I have managed to obtain my export and import certificates from the South African Revenue Services (SARS) through the DTI’s assistance,” she said adding that her future plan was to export fresh Cape fish to the overseas market. 

The Export Awareness Programme is important in ensuring that South Africa achieves its Industrial Policy Action Plan (IPAP) goals of increasing the production and export of valued-added products to overseas markets.

Sabelo Nethe of Nethe Projects, which is operating in the built environment, says the programme has made him aware of the various dynamics of the import and export industry.

“My company meets all the requirements and I am in possession of the export-ready certification required to take our services overseas,” he said.

He added that his next goal was to identify overseas markets suitable for his services and to also participate on the DTI led pavilions.

“My main target is the African continent, particularly West Africa where there is currently a boom in construction services. I plan to create a lasting footprint there,” he said.
